Blizzard: StarCraft Won't Be Xbox Exclusive, But Details Are Scarce

Blizzard confirms its upcoming StarCraft shooter won't be exclusive to Xbox, but refuses to say which platforms it will hit. The game is expected around 2030.
Ever waited 15 years for a game? That's the reality for StarCraft fans. Blizzard's sci-fi series has been quiet since 2017's StarCraft: Remastered, and the next entry isn't expected until around 2030. So when news broke that it might be an Xbox exclusive, you can bet PC players everywhere felt a chill. Good news: Blizzard says that won't happen.
A Blizzard spokesperson told Kotaku that they "can only say for now that StarCraft won't be exclusive." When pressed, they added that calling it an "Xbox-exclusive" would be incorrect. That's a huge relief for longtime fans who've been playing StarCraft on PC since 1998. The series has always been loyal to mouse and keyboard, with only one brief console detour: StarCraft 64 on Nintendo 64 back in 2000. Otherwise, it's been Windows and Mac all the way.
But here's where it gets fuzzy. Blizzard won't say which platforms StarCraft will actually land on. Will it be PC only? PC and Xbox? Something else entirely? Your guess is as good as ours. The company is staying tight-lipped beyond that one denial.
Why does this matter? Microsoft's 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard shook up the gaming world. Since then, Xbox has been all over the place with exclusivity. Call of Duty went from PlayStation to all consoles. Starfield, which many expected to be an Xbox blockbuster, ended up on PlayStation too. Then this summer, Xbox seemed to pivot back toward exclusives. Chief strategy officer Matthew Ball told GamesRadar+ that CEO Asha Sharma believes "to build a platform, you must have exclusive services and software โ in this case, games." So you'd think StarCraft, a massive franchise, would fit that pipeline. Apparently not.
Some fans had convinced themselves StarCraft would be exclusive to the next-gen Xbox Project Helix. That always seemed unlikely given the series' PC roots. Now we know for sure it won't be locked to Xbox. But the lack of specifics leaves plenty of questions. Will it come to PlayStation? Will it hit PC day one? Blizzard isn't saying.
One thing we do know: the new StarCraft shooter isn't a seasonal game. According to its lead, "The story has a beginning, a middle, and an end." So expect a complete narrative experience, not an endless live-service grind. That's refreshing, right?
So, what do you think? Are you glad StarCraft isn't Xbox-exclusive, or were you hoping for a console exclusive? Let us know in the comments.
