Airbnb Host Uses AI Fake To Demand $1,700 From Guest

A Redditor was asked to pay $1,700 for an overflowing toilet, but the photo evidence was AI-generated. The case was resolved in their favor.
Ever been hit with an unexpected bill after a hotel stay? Now imagine that bill is $1,700 for a flooded toilet—and the photo proof looks like it came straight out of an AI generator. That's exactly what happened to one Redditor, who shared their nightmare on r/isthisAI.
According to the post, an Airbnb host—described as "one of the biggest Airbnb companies of their state in Australia"—demanded $1,700 for water damage. The evidence? A photo of an overflowing toilet that immediately raised eyebrows. The Redditor pointed out telltale signs of AI generation: water dripping from the toilet but no splashes, and the door handle positioned at eye level. "The entire house should flood at this point," they wrote.
Other Redditors quickly agreed, noting the inconsistencies. But here's the kicker: Google's Gemini AI can detect its own SynthID watermark in the fake image. So not only did AI help create the scam, it also helped expose it.
The story has a happy ending. The Redditor later updated: "Good news everyone! I had this case resolved and deemed ineligible for the reimbursement they asked for... Also another detail I forgot to mention is that there is a floor underneath this one so if there are a few inches of water on the ground the entire first floor should be an aquarium!"
So the guest walked away without paying a cent. But the incident raises bigger questions: how many other hosts might try this? And how can you protect yourself?
The Redditor's advice is simple: take photos and videos of your rental before you leave. That way, you have proof if anything comes up. It's a small step that could save you a massive headache.
AI is making it easier than ever to fake evidence, but it's also getting better at spotting fakes. For now, your best defense is your own camera. Will you be taking extra precautions on your next stay?
