8Bitdo FlipPad Review: Sleek Game Boy Controller, But Flawed

The 8Bitdo FlipPad is a $29.99 USB-C controller that turns your phone into a Game Boy, but its sleek design comes with fit issues and limitations.
Ever wished you could turn your phone into a Game Boy with a snap? The 8Bitdo FlipPad promises exactly that, but it's a device that'll only truly win over a specific type of player. At $29.99, you get a sleek, clicky controller that flips open like a '90s flip phone, but its direct USB-C connection means it's completely dependent on your phone. So, is it worth it?
Let's talk about what's great. The FlipPad is incredibly slim at just 19.7mm and weighs only 31.5 grams, making it the sleekest Game Boy mobile controller out there. The buttons are satisfyingly clicky, and the hinge adds a fun, nostalgic mechanic. It's designed to sit at the bottom of your screen, so your phone feels like it has physical buttons rather than being wedged into a gamepad. For quick Pokemon sessions on the go, this casual setup is perfect.
But that sleekness comes at a cost. Unlike the GameSir Pocket Taco, the FlipPad lacks a battery and shoulder buttons. Instead, it has four left and right 'back' buttons on its face. For most Game Boy games, that's fine, but try strafing in DOOM for the GBA and your fingers will get twisted. The direct USB-C design also means it's confined to devices with a bottom-centered port, and it won't work with thicker phone cases.
Speaking of cases, this is where the FlipPad really drops the ball. It's designed for standard protective shells around 2mm thick, but in testing, it rarely fit flush. With a Google Pixel 7 and a generic silicone case, there was an air-gap pivot, causing the pad to wiggle. And with an Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro in a Devil Case, it wouldn't plug in at all. Even if the port were centered, thicker cases prevent the connector from reaching. Some plastic adapters for different phones and case thicknesses could have made a big difference.
The hinge is a standout feature, flipping the controller out of the way when not in use. It's a clever nod to the Game Boy Advance SP, but unlike those devices, the hinge here is about convenience, not protection. It all hinges on the pivot, and while the mechanism is solid, the fit issues overshadow the experience.
So, who is this for? If you have a bare iPhone or a very thin case and want a ultra-portable controller for classic games, the FlipPad is a solid choice. But if you have a thicker case or a phone with an offset USB-C port, you'll likely be frustrated. At $29.99, it's a decent value for what it offers, but the limitations are hard to ignore.
What do you think? Will you be picking up the 8Bitdo FlipPad, or does the case compatibility issue kill the deal for you? Let us know in the comments!
