007 First Light Devs Explain Switch 2 Delay and Their Youngest Bond Ever

IO Interactive talks 007 First Light's non-open-world design, 26-year-old Bond Patrick Gibson, post-launch praise, and why the Switch 2 version slipped to March 2027.
Ever wondered what a James Bond game looks like when the Hitman studio decides not to make another Hitman? That's exactly what IO Interactive is answering with 007 First Light, and the team sat down with us at Tokyo Game Show to spill the details.
First up, the big question: why no open world? The devs say Hitman is all about patience, precision and careful planning, rewarding players who study the environment. Bond is a different fantasy entirely. His world moves faster, hits harder, and runs on constant momentum. You still get multiple routes, open areas and real choices, but the focus shifts to cinematic action, stealth and improvising under pressure. The story is more guided too, a focused origin tale built on classic Bond pillars: espionage, style, wit, charm, cars, action and globe-trotting adventure.
Speaking of gadgets, yes, you'll be scavenging for charges. That resource management around Q Branch devices is deliberate, pushing you to keep interacting with the world instead of treating gadgets as infinite tools. It also keeps devices from being so powerful that one button solves every challenge. Very Bond, honestly.
As for the new face of 007, don't expect a movie actor impression. IO says 60-plus years of Bond history gave them plenty of inspiration, but they wanted their own young Bond finding his feet at MI6, not a tribute to any era or actor. Patrick Gibson brings something genuinely new, and at 26 he's the youngest Bond yet. You'll follow his journey to earn the 007 codename. Asked about sequels, the team says they're just focused on making this game the best it can be, with a full year of substantial post-launch content planned, including new Tac Sim missions with driving sections and new gadgets. First up is Even Realities' G2 Glasses, with Bawma-specific content still in the works.
One thing to be clear about: this is a standalone original story, deliberately separate from any past or future Bond film adaptations. This Bond belongs to games, full stop, and the team doesn't want movie or TV speculation blurring that line.
On the reception, IO says they're incredibly proud of how players and press responded, never taking it for granted. What moved them most was the passion of longtime Bond fans tracking every collectible and easter egg, plus newcomers calling it their favorite Bond ever.
So why did the Switch 2 version slip to March 2027? The team insists it already runs well, as people saw at Gamescom and TGS. The extra time is about matching the quality players deserve, getting cinematic lighting, scale and detail right in both docked and handheld modes. They'd rather polish everything than rush something that can't hold that standard.
007 First Light is out now on PS5, Xbox Series and PC, with Switch 2 arriving March 2027. Will you be picking it up?
